Bomb plot defendant Jerry Drake Varnell found mentally competent

The man accused of trying to blow up a downtown Oklahoma City bank with what he thought was a vehicle bomb was found mentally competent Tuesday to face trial.

Jerry Drake Varnell, now 23, of Sayre, was arrested after an undercover FBI agent helped him construct the device with inert materials, authorities reported.

I-40 on-ramp near downtown reopens Tuesday after fatality investigation

An Interstate 40 on-ramp near downtown has reopened Tuesday after being closed for an Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigation into a Saturday pedestrian fatality.

Eulyessea J. Ayers, 37, of Midwest City, was struck by an unknown vehicle and the driver left the scene about 8:45 p.m.

Hundreds of Las Vegas shooting victims file lawsuits in California court

Hundreds of victims of the Oct. 1 mass shooting in Las Vegas filed five lawsuits on Monday in a California court against the operators of the hotel from which the gunman fired, the organizers of the country music festival he targeted and the killer's estate.


The largest of the lawsuits was filed on behalf of 450 people who were either injured in or witnessed the shooting, while the other four were brought by families of people who were killed or severely injured.

Police arrest mom accused of abandoning 'baby Jane' in Arizona yard in 2016

MESA, Az. - The Mesa Police Department says they’ve arrested a mom accused of abandoning her newborn in a stranger's yard in 2016.

Police say on March 3, 2016, 24-year-old Maricela Perez allegedly left the baby girl, who was believed to be just a few hours old, in a car seat in a yard near Alma School and 9th Place in Mesa.

Police were unable to locate either parent of the child back in 2016, but blood found in the car seat carrier led to a hit in the Combined DNA Index System after the case had gone cold.

Former Tulsa Police Officer Shannon Kepler, wearing shackles and a striped black Tulsa Jail jumpsuit, showed no emotion Monday morning as Jeremey Lake's father looked at him to say he was wrong to kill the 19-year-old outside his aunt's home more than three years ago.

For Carl Morse, his victim impact statement was the first real opportunity since Lake's death to describe in open court how much the loss of Lake hurt him and the rest of his family.
