Pledge deaths at US colleges fuel reviews of Greek life

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The deaths of at least four fraternity pledges this year have helped fuel a re-examination of Greek life at U.S. colleges.

More and more schools are hitting pause on the organizations as they grapple with how to prevent hazing, alcohol misuse and other misconduct.

The move comes after pledges died at Florida State, Texas State, Penn State and Louisiana State universities.

Twenty-six people are charged in the Penn State case over the death of a 19-year-old student.

At Louisiana State, 10 people were arrested on misdemeanor hazing charges in the alcohol-related death of an 18-year-old student, and one person also was charged with felony negligent homicide.

Fraternities say that they've long worked to tackle hazing and alcohol abuse, and that considering whether further changes are needed is part of that.

Louisiana man accused of killing ex-wife with an ax indicted

CHALMETTE- A grand jury has indicted a man accused of attacking his ex-wife in front of her home with an ax as she was leaving for work, killing her.

Multiple media outlets report that 56-year-old Mark Owens was indicted Tuesday on first-degree murder charges in the killing of 48-year-old Kimberly Owens in September.

Authorities say Owens attacked the woman in front of her home in Chalmette, a New Orleans suburb.

St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann said Kimberly Owens had obtained a restraining order against her ex-husband prior to the attack. Police say there was a history of domestic violence.

Law enforcement stepping up holiday traffic patrol

BATON ROUGE - Traveling during the holiday season can be a massive headache. Here in Baton Rouge, traffic on a normal day causes a ton of frustration.

"If you get stuck in the 4 or 5 o'clock traffic you're doomed," Baton Rouge Resident Joey Manda said.

Especially when it comes to the new Mississippi River bridge.

"The bridge going toward Lafayette and Port Allen is always just tremendous traffic, pretty much no matter what time you go over there," Manda said.

The West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is taking extra precautions to help things run smoothly over the next few travel days, including putting more deputies on motorcycles.

"The motorcycles are a valuable tool in getting to traffic - especially on that bridge," Lt. Ken Albarez said. "We can weave in and out of traffic. We have the lights and sirens and we can get to it quickly."

Albarez expects traffic to be heavy all day Wednesday.

"I would say from about 11 o'clock tomorrow morning until about 6 o'clock tomorrow evening I think is going to be our critical times," Albarez said.

The DOTD says they also plan to limit lane closures on 190 and I-10 near Lafayette to facilitate the flow of traffic. But officials want to stress - safe travel starts with you.

"Don't text and drive. If you're trying to get your coordinates - you're mapping devices on your phone - do it before you take off," Albarez said.

Olympic champion Gabby Douglas says team doctor abused her

Olympic champion Gabby Douglas says team doctor abused her
Olympic champion gymnast Gabby Douglas says she is among the group of athletes sexually abused by a former team doctor.

Douglas, the 2012 Olympic all-around champion and a three-time gold medalist, wrote in an Instagram post Tuesday night that she waited so long to reveal the abuse by Larry Nassar because she was part of a group "conditioned to stay silent."

The 21-year-old Douglas is the latest high-profile gymnast to come forward against Nassar, who spent nearly two decades as the national team doctor for USA Gymnastics before being fired in 2015. Two-time Olympic teammate Aly Raisman detailed her abuse by Nassar in her autobiography "Fierce" released earlier this month. Two-time Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney disclosed abuse by Nassar in October.

Nassar, 54, is accused of molesting several girls while working for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University. He's facing similar charges in a neighboring county and lawsuits filed by more than 125 women and girls.

Report: Former Parkview Baptist student pleads guilty to carnal knowledge of a juvenile in 2015

BATON ROUGE - A former Parkview Baptist student pleaded guilty to carnal knowledge of a juvenile following an incident in 2015, in which he reportedly had sex with a 16-year-old girl in a New Orleans hotel.

According to The Advocate, 20-year-old Pryce Fletcher was convicted of the misdemeanor charge on Nov. 16.

Fletcher, who was 18-years-old at the time of the incident, and the victim were visiting New Orleans to see the high school state championship football games.

Fletcher approached the victim on Bourbon Street, but she does not remember what happened until she woke up to Fletcher standing by the door in a hotel room. The victim said she had consumed alcoholic beverages before being approached by Fletcher.

The conviction was the result of a plea deal that lessened the charge against Fletcher from indecent behavior with a juvenile to carnal knowledge of a juvenile, according to The Advocate.

Fletcher was sentenced to a six month suspended sentence. His probation will include 26 counseling sessions.

LOS ANGELES - David Cassidy of "The Partridge Family" fame has died at age 67.

Residents fed up with constant brown water in Livingston Parish neighborhood

Residents fed up with constant brown water in Livingston Parish neighborhood

FRENCH SETTLEMENT - Residents in one Livingston Parish neighborhood say they've had enough of the brown water that's become a constant nuisance in their daily lives.

The French Settlement Water Company blames the problem on manganese inside the pipes, adding that there won't be a long-term solution until sometime next year. But residents say that answer's not good enough.

"Some people make jokes about it and say 'that's cofee, or tea.' It's the color of black coffee," said Bridget Cutrer, one of those fed up homeowners. "This last time? The water's been brown about 5 days now."

Cutrer and her neighbors says it gets this way every month, often several times over the 30-day period. During those times, Cutrer's family can't bathe, cook or even drink a glass of water.

"You just try your best not to let the water get in your kids' mouths or noses. I've had to take my kids to other people houses for baths... It's all we can do."

The water company attributes the issue to the fact Dawson Lane is at the end of the "Rural Water System", saying customer-induced 'shocks' to the system is knocking the manganese loose inside the pipes.

The company added that it would need to treat the pipes, which would make the problem worse before it gets better. It also says a new well coming in 2018 should help the problem.

Uber reveals cover-up of hack affecting 57M riders, drivers

SAN FRANCISCO- Uber is coming clean about its cover-up of a year-old hacking attack that stole personal information about more than 57 million of the beleaguered ride-hailing service's customers and drivers.

The revelation Tuesday marks the latest stain on Uber's reputation.

The San Francisco company ousted Travis Kalanick as CEO in June after an internal investigation concluded he had built a culture that allowed female workers to be sexually harassed and encouraged employees to push legal limits.

Uber's current CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, criticized the company's handling of the data theft in a blog post that said there's no evidence the stolen information has been misused.

The heist took the names, email addresses and phone numbers of 57 million riders. The thieves also nabbed the driver's license numbers of 600,000 Uber drivers.
