Public Safety Broadband Commission Recommends FirstNet Opt-In Decision to Governor

The Public Safety Broadband Network Commission will recommend to Governor Phil Scott that Vermont opt-in to the federal FirstNet plan to deliver a wireless broadband network to the state's public safety community. Today's recommendation culminates a more than year-long evaluation effort by the Governor-appointed commission to evaluate the best option for the build-out of the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network in Vermont.

Burlington fire displaces residents in apartment building

The Burlington Fire Department responded to 253-255 Pearl St. at 10:42 Sunday morning for a structure fire. First crews on scene saw smoke coming from the back of the building, then discovered the outside wall of the second and third floor were on fire. All on-duty and off-duty fire fighters were then called in, and extinguished the fire in a little under and hour, despite cold, continuous winds.

Fiery opposition to burn ordinance, training facility in Stowe

A fire-training idea struck sparks at Monday evening’s Stowe Select Board meeting. A small group of Stowe Fire Department volunteers has been honing an idea for a new fire department training center where the Civilian Conservation Corps camp is located on Moscow Road. The fire department has used that site half a dozen times a year as a training location, primarily to practice extricating people from wrecked vehicles, says Scott Reeves, a captain in the fire department.

The recently filed petition calling for a village-wide vote to restore fire department funds has the sufficient number of signatures, confirmed Municipal Manager Shane O’Keefe on Wednesday. State Police: Driver was high in August crash that killed four in Addison County

The driver of a car involved in a crash that killed four carnival workers headed to an Addison County fair in August was substantially impaired by THC — the active ingredient in marijuana, according to Vermont State Police. A blood test on Steven Holmes, 21, of Chatsworth, Georgia, showed he had more than 50 nanograms of THC in his system when the Volkswagen carrying three coworkers crashed head-on into a truck on Route 22A in Bridport.

Firefighters respond to fire at Burlington apartment building

Crews responded to a fire at a two-story building in Burlington Monday night. It happened on North Street. The building is home to multiple apartments and a store on the ground floor. Crews found heavy smoke in an upstairs apartment but fortunately no one was inside at the time. The fire is being called accidental, but fire officials are still investigating.

Milton fire destroys feed, farm equipment

Fire crews raced to Meadowbrook Acres Inc. just after 11 p.m. Saturday for a barn fire. Smoldering straw and burned machine parts is all that was left. "It was pretty much engulfed by the time the rest of the equipment got on-scene,” Milton Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chris Poirier said. Meadowbrook Acres is a maple sugar shack and dairy farm along Lake Road in Milton.

Fire destroys home, motorcycles in Pittsford

A house and a collection of motorcycles were destroyed in an early morning fire off Route 7 Saturday. Pittsford Fire Chief Tom Hooker said the call from the home of Lloyd Provin and his live-in partner came shortly after midnight and that the initial report was that someone was trapped inside the burning house.

Propane tank explodes, sparking fire in Williamstown

A propane tank exploded Friday night in Williamstown. Firefighters say they got a call around 7:30 p.m. Seven crews responded, it took around an hour to put out. Officials tell Local 22 & Local 44 that someone was trying to keep the tank warm, with a blanket around it and a light shining on it. Firefighters say the owner heard a boom from the tank exploding.

Rutland pares fire chief list from 37 to a few

A city committee tasked with identifying a new fire chief has pared the list of candidates to three or four candidates from almost 40 applications. Meanwhile, the Board of Aldermen on Monday agreed to the terms of a new three-year contract for unionized firefighters. Alderwoman Sharon Davis, president of the board, gave a brief update Monday on the search for a new fire chief.

Dover: Voters to decide North Branch Fire District bond

On Thursday, November 9, North Branch Fire District voters will decide whether to take out a $4,700,000 bond for repairs to the district’s equipment. Voters will also be asked whether certain town buildings should be exempt from sewage fees and whether the fire district should set up a capital reserve fund to finance future repairs.

FEMA assessment teams on the ground in New Hampshire, Vermont this week

Assessment teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be in New Hampshire and Vermont this week to look at damage from last week's wind storm. State emergency management officials say New Hampshire has in excess of $14.2 million in estimated damages. The greatest amount of damage is in Carroll, Coos, Grafton, and Hillsborough counties.

Fairfax raises money to help hurt firefighter

Sunday was no basic bingo game. It was all for lifetime Fairfax firefighter D.J. Leach. Leach was clearing downed trees on Monday after last week's wind storm, when a tree fell, hitting him in the chest. He suffered several serious injuries. "He broke several bones in his back, his sternum, some ribs, and currently has no feeling below the waist,” said Jay Leach, D.

Family in Milton Displaced by Fire

An early morning fire in Milton has left a family of 5 homeless. No one was injured in the blaze and 3 of the 4 family pets were rescued. No word on the cause but Fire Chief Don Turner says it likely began on the front porch of the home. According to the chief "The owner woke up to a cracking noise.
